Actor, writer and living legend of the stage and screen, Maureen Lipman (‘Educating Rita’, ‘The Pianist’), sits down with award-winning playwright and daughter Amy Rosenthal, to discuss their shared love of Rosenthal’s work and its enduring legacy in British film and television.
Playwright and screenwriter Jack Rosenthal, CBE made a significant contribution to the cannon of British-Jewish 20th century theatre, television and film, contributing to Coronation Street and That Was ‘The Week That Was’ and creating ‘Pardon the Expression’, ‘The Dustbinmen’, ‘The Lovers’ and ‘Ready When You Are, Mr. McGill’, among many others. He won three BATFAs for ‘Bar Mitzvah Boy, The Evacuees and Spend, Spend, Spend’ and co-wrote ‘Yentl’ with Barbara Streisand.

Maureen Lipman is a BAFTA-nominated star of stage, television and film. She is best known for her roles in The Pianist and Educating Rita. She has a recurring role on Coronation Street and has appeared on Dr. Who, Casualty, Midsomer Murders, The Vicar of Dibley and Plebs. Most recently, her stage show Maureen Lipman is ‘Up for It’ was at the Edinburgh Festival and the Southbank Centre in 2018. She was married to filmmaker Jack Rosenthal from 1973 until his death in 2004.
Amy Rosenthal is the daughter of screenwriter Jack Rosenthal and Maureen Lipman. She won the Sunday Times Drama Award with her debut play Henna Night in 1999 and was shortlisted for the Susan Smith Blackburn Prize in 2008 for her play On the Rocks. She has written such plays as Jerusalem Syndrome, Daring Pairings and The Tailor Made Man. Rosenthal has written for BBC Radio and teaches playwriting at Arvon and at Birkbeck College, University of London.
