Early 20th century Europe was fertile ground for new ideas, and a Jewish perspective, expressed through thinkers, artists and architects, was fundamental to concepts that would shape the century ahead.

As anti-Semitism rose across mainland Europe, many left in search of a better life.

This two-part lecture traces the Jewish architect émigrés who made pre-war Britain their home, bringing with them radical ideas that left a rich legacy now being fully recognized, one that formed the backbone of the welfare state Architecture. Concurrently, many émigrés found a home in an emerging Jewish State.

There, the British Garden City movement's progressive planning ideas merged with a radical new architectural style then budding in continental Europe. Imported by Jews fleeing persecution, this style resonated deeply with the dream of building an infrastructure for a Socialist Zionist state.

The lecture will explore the common ideas, and the buildings that were built that contributed to the shaping of the two countries.
