How can a woman from an ethnic group that was hostile to the ancient Israelites marry an Israelite man?  And how can she possibly have become the great-grandmother of the Messiah? Ruth, the Moabite, did!

What does the story tell us about the morals and mores of the Jewish people’s ancestors? How did it change the very way that we understand Judaism?

Like ‘Mega Megillah’ in the spring term, ‘Moabite to Messiah’ also explores a book that is central to a festival—in this case, The Book of Ruth and Shavuot. We’ll have time for other themes, too, such as identity politics and cultural boundaries, women as initiators, and the delights of gleaning (who knew?).

Angela Gluck has worked as a teacher, trainer and consultant to schools and local authorities. She is the author of over 40 books on aspects of religion and history, and broadcasts on these subjects. She devotes part of her work to teaching children, young people and adults in cross-communal settings. She is an active trustee of The Separated Child Foundation.
