Do you want to explore painting and drawing or develop your skills under expert guidance and tuition? Then this course is for you.   

Students in the Open Art Studio class receive technical assistance and mentorship for their personal art projects. Topics include colour, composition, proportions, and the history of art. Students are to bring in their own project ideas with source materials (printed images, books, and/or objects. These will be used to develop a project in drawing then with the possibility of painting.  Please refrain from using images on a mobile phone.  

The teacher is here for guidance by providing pointers to get you to your artistic goals. 

What You’ll Learn

  • Understand how to use foundational art techniques (like line quality in drawing, paint colour blending and composition/proportions)  
  • Express ideas visually and develop your own creative work 
  • Learn how to work from your initial concept to the completion of an artwork with instructor support 

Who’s It For? 

This class is for anyone who wishes to do art but wants some guidance & inspiration. Everyone is welcome, from beginners to more experienced.    

Do I need to bring materials?  

This class provides basic materials, including cartridge and watercolour paper. We also have:  

  • Pencils, coloured pencils, charcoal, erasures 
  • Watercolours, acrylics, palette paper 
  • Basic brushes (including watercolour) and palettes knives 

Advanced materials like canvases and specialised paper are not supplied. We recommend students bring in materials they have at home like paint, canvas, or watercolours. Michael is also happy to also recommend where to buy materials.   

Who Delivers It? 

Michael Ajerman is an American artist who focuses on colour in painting and drawing. He has consistently exhibited internationally, recently with the Isabel Sullivan Gallery, New York and SQFT: SPACE Gallery, London. Currently he is exhibiting in the Courtauld Institute’s East Wing Biennial exhibition. 

In 2003, he completed his Masters Degree at the Slade School of Art, receiving the British Institute Award from the Royal Academy the same year. In 2018 he was awarded UCLA’s Kitaj Research Fellowship.  He recently contributed writing to the new monograph on Euan Uglow titled, 'The Uglow Papers' by Andrew Lambirth.  Over the past few years he has lectured on individual artists at several universities.  This coming autumn he will be lecturing on painter, Paula Modersohn Becker at JW3.
