In the war-torn Netherlands, a local Jewish boy has vivid escapist fantasies of being in a Hollywood western where good always triumphs.

The Lucky Star

Synopsis

Amsterdam, 1940. Bar Mitzvah boy David Goldberg is obsessed with American westerns and dreams of becoming a sheriff. His fantasy about fighting off bandits in the Wild West nearly comes true when the Germans arrive. Separated from his parents, David escapes to a remote village where he is hidden by a kind woman and falls in love with a beautiful girl. Capturing a high ranking Nazi officer, David knows the time has come for the ultimate showdown with those who have taken his parents away.

Long before Life Is Beautiful and Jojo Rabbit, this gem of a film, co-written by the late English playwright Jack Rosenthal, shows the power of imagination to conquer our deepest and darkest fears.
