Explore Miri Freud-Kandel’s new book: Louis Jacobs and the Quest for a Contemporary Jewish Theology.

This groundbreaking study combines an in-depth analysis of Jacobs' theology with a consideration of its potential resonance to our contemporary “post-secular” age. Examine how Jacobs’ thought, by championing the role of the Quest—encouraging a deeper engagement with Jewish sources to help Jews find meaning in their faith and recognise the power of its divine commands—can offer a model for a committed, observant, yet questioning Judaism.

Looking beyond denominational boundaries, this talk will consider how a focus on ritual, study, and community can provide building blocks for constructing contemporary Jewish theologies that respond to a shifting cultural context.

Miri Freud-Kandel is Lecturer in Modern Judaism in the Faculty of Theology and Religion at the University of Oxford and a Fellow of the Oxford Centre for Hebrew and Jewish Studies. She is co-convenor of the Oxford Summer Institute on Modern and Contemporary Judaism.
