In this four-week course, David will explore how Israel and the Middle East has changed since 7 October. 

Topics include: 

  • 50 years from the Yom Kippur War to 7 October – is Israel losing its military superiority? 
  • The end of the war and back to domestic politics – has anything changed? 
  • The Gaza War – did Israel win or lose? 
  • Post-October – is there any point in talking peace? 
  • Living in the south of Israel – personal experiences from 7 October and the Gaza War 
  • The new Middle East after the Gaza War and the regional threat 
  • The social and human cost of the Gaza War for Israeli society 
  • The fate of the hostages and national priorities – heart-rending dilemmas 

David Newman is professor of Geopolitics in the Department of Politics and Government, and former Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences, at Ben-Gurion University of the Negev. Originally from the UK, David lives in the south of Israel where much of the present war is taking place. David has an OBE (Order of the British Empire) for promoting academic links between Israel and Britain.
