Judaism and Islam—as two of the three ‘Abrahamic Faiths’, growing from common sources—share many beliefs and elements of ritual. For centuries, Jews living in Islamic regimes were physically secure, experienced freedom of religious practice and enjoyed a climate of respect and appreciation.
Political developments in the Eastern Mediterranean and Western Asia—especially since World War I—cast a shadow over these somewhat idyllic images and relationships and pose questions about whether they have a chance of surviving.
In this one-term course—which Angela has created especially for JW3—she will outline the changing relationships between Muslims and Jews, using a variety of material, including case studies. It will involve a long historical sweep but with the emphasis on the intercultural realities in the modern period.
