In this five week course, Clive will look at the origins of romanticism, explore some of the great poets and poems of the Romantic period, and consider the extent to which the conceptual attitudes of romance help or hinder us in today's world.

Romance was born in Europe in the Middle Ages, but received a huge boost in the 'Romantic' period at the end of the 18th century.

  • Week 1: The Birth of Romance and the Chivalric Code
  • Week 2: What was Romanticism reacting against? The end of the 18th century.
  • Week 3: 'The Romantics': How far is it helpful to suggest that this was the mood of a period?
  • Week 4: 'The New Romantics' of the 20th century
  • Week 5: Can we any longer even imagine a world without 'romance'? What the 'Barbie' movie tells us.
