The story of the 43 Group - the Jewish ex-servicemen and women who organised to confront British fascism in the years immediately following the Second World War - remains one of the most remarkable and least familiar chapters in modern British Jewish history.

Join novelist Susie Gordon in conversation with Dr Vivi Lachs as she discusses the research and writing behind A Monster in the Ash. Drawing on her own family's East End roots, Susie will explore the history that inspired the novel, the challenges of bringing the past to life through fiction, and the connections between personal stories and collective memory.

The conversation will also consider the place of Jewish stories in publishing today, and what it means to write about Jewish identity, belonging and history in the twenty-first century. A fascinating discussion about history, storytelling and the enduring impact of the past on the present. Dr Vivi Lachs is a historian of London’s Jewish East End, a Yiddishist and performer.
