Classical Music Series

David Waterman (cellist), Curator of the Classical Music Series, writes:

Welcome to the fourth Season of the Series which features distinctive artists of international quality heard in JW3’s ideally intimate and warmly welcoming hall. The opening concert on Sept 30th is given by the Russian-Israeli pianist Boris Giltburg, celebrated across the world for his scintillating interpretations of Bach and Beethoven, as well as the dark and yearning music of Rachmaninov, and Ravel’s pianistic and imaginative tour de force, Gaspard de la Nuit.

Also new to us this season are the superb Aviv Quartet centring their programme around Beethoven’s staggering Op 131, the quartet he himself loved above all others. And we shall meet the sparkling Taiwanese-Canadian pianist Connie Shih, the most frequent duo partner of Steven Isserlis; along with the distinguished Russian-Vietnamese violinist Aylen Pritchin, whose playing is currently taking Europe by storm. They and others are joining me in Schubert’s joyous “Trout” Quintet, surely the most popular single piece of all chamber music. The addition of a double bass helps to give “The Trout” its buoyancy and verve, and we are delighted to welcome Enno Senft, principal bass of the Chamber Orchestra of Europe.

Another uniquely gifted, highly individual violinist is the Greek-Albanian Jonian Ilias Kadesha who is joined by the marvellously expressive Israeli London-based pianist Noam Greenberg, and the superb, sensitive Vienna-based, Kilburn-born cellist, Vashti Hunter, in a fascinating programme exemplifying every duo combination plus piano trios.

We welcome back the tremendous French-Korean violinist, Irène Duval, who won the hearts of the JW3 audience with her warmth, naturalness and spontaneity, and will lead two glorious Mozart quintets sandwiching one of Beethoven. We are joined by three more stunning string players: Swedish-Japanese violist Ami-Louise Johnsson, American-German Emma Wernig, violist of the distinguished Doric Quartet, and violinist, Tim Crawford, all in huge demand across Europe.

Finally, old JW3 favourites, Scottish pianist Alasdair Beatson and Finnish violinist, Sini Simonen, both incomparable and much-loved,join me in Schubert’s powerfully moving E flat piano trio.
