Drawing on obituaries, memorial essays and tributes published in the AJR Journal between 1955 and 2025, Uprooted Lives: Obituaries of Refugees and Survivors of the Holocaust traces the lives of German-speaking Jewish refugees and émigrés who fled Nazi persecution and built new lives, largely in Britain.

Through stories of exile, rebuilding, work, family and community, the book offers a moving portrait of a generation and the lasting impact it had on British Jewish life. Join us and guests for a conversation about memory, resilience and what these lives can still tell us today.
