Sorting through papers and photographs after his mother’s death, Moritz uncovers the history of close family members murdered by the Nazis.
His search takes him into a past marked by tragedy, grief and the dark shadows cast on Jewish life by the Holocaust. His parents left Germany as child refugees, escaping to London before later settling in Cardiff after the war.
Yet the idea of being a stranger or outsider ‘an Ausländer” continued to haunt the family, running through Moritz’s childhood and resurfacing in his adopted home of California, where he became one of Silicon Valley’s most celebrated investors.
This commemorative evening will include conversation, music and time for reflection, marking Kristallnacht while considering the continuing urgency of Moritz’s story: what happens when ordinary people give license to despots, and how the lessons of the past continue to resonate today.
