Cable Street Stories: A Family Story & Creative Workshop

Set in London's East End in 1936, the story follows young Elsie as she discovers the importance of friendship, courage and standing alongside her neighbours when her community faces division. Through storytelling and hands-on making, children and families will explore how kindness, cooperation and looking out for one another can help build strong communities.

The session begins with a lively reading from the story, bringing Elsie's world to life before families are invited to explore a series of creative activity stations at their own pace.

Creative Stations

🏘️ Street of Friends Help build a colourful East End street by decorating houses, shops and neighbours. Together we'll create a welcoming community where everyone belongs.

🧱 Paper Brick Wall Decorate a paper brick with drawings or words that make a community strong—kindness, friendship, fairness, respect and courage. Every brick will become part of a collaborative mural celebrating the power of standing together.

📢 Community Placards Design your own mini placard with positive messages such as Everyone Belongs, Be Kind, Stand Together or create your own message of welcome and friendship.

Throughout the workshop we'll talk about what makes a good neighbour, how communities support one another, and how even small acts of kindness can make a big difference. Children will leave with their own creations and the memory of having helped build a shared artwork inspired by one of the most remarkable moments in London's history.
