Defeating Hate brings together Katja Hoyer’s Weimar and Julia Franck’s Worlds Apart to explore how Germany has confronted fascism, silence and divided memory. 

Hoyer’s Weimar traces ordinary lives in a town on the edge of catastrophe: a place associated with Goethe, Schiller and Bauhaus, but also with the rise of fascism and the creation of Buchenwald.

Franck’s Worlds Apart offers a deeply personal account of childhood, displacement, neglect and the search for belonging in East Germany.

Through film clips and conversation, this event asks how ordinary people are shaped by history, how silence passes through families and societies, and what it takes to face the past with honesty, responsibility and compassion. In partnership with the Goethe-Institut London.
