This talk examines how artists have responded to painful histories through art, exploring whether creativity can help us confront experiences of rupture, loss and exile, and become a form of repair.

The Jewish concept of 'tikkun' begins with an acknowledgement of rupture: that what has been broken can be gathered, reimagined and transformed. From Marc Chagall and Chana Orloff to Aaron Siskind, Eva Hesse, Susan Hiller and Christian Boltanski, artists have responded to painful histories and sought ways to give form to experiences that resist words. Through painting, sculpture, photography, film and installation, they have explored memory and loss, identity and exile, vulnerability and survival. This talk will explore the creative act as a means of confronting rupture and whether making art can itself become a form of repair.
