Amsterdam is a lot more than canals and bicycles. Its history stretches back to a 12th century fishing village, before turning itself into a great European commercial centre in the late 16th century. A city with many ups and downs but today it remains one of the continent’s most vibrant and tolerant of cities.

Why Jews Pray

This talk will explore what the verbal medium itself contributes to religious experience, and how texts depend for their effectiveness on being both understood and misunderstood. Rabbinic thinkers implied that we should pray both hopefully, as though it will effective, and in despair, knowing that its effect is unknowable. We cope with the despair at never being heard, by using language in a unique way in worship.

Amsterdam is a lot more than canals and bicycles. Its history stretches back to a 12th century fishing village, before turning itself into a great European commercial centre in the late 16th century. A city with many ups and downs but today it remains one of the continent’s most vibrant and tolerant of cities.

Did Jesus speak Hebrew, and what difference does it make?

Although the gospels transmit words of Jesus in Greek, historical likelihood suggest that he said them in a Semitic language. A few short phrases are given in Aramaic in the gospels of Mark and Matthew: e.g. Talitha Qum “Little girl, wake up.” Most scholars therefore think Aramaic was the language of Jesus. But the discovery of new texts, and advances in historical dialectology have set the question in a different light, and nowadays it seems most probable that Jesus did at times speak Hebrew.

The Unorthodox

When Yakov Cohen’s daughter is expelled from school because of her ethnicity, the widowed father decides to fight back. Despite having no political experience, he forms Shas, a new party whose aim is to cater for the needs of the disenfranchised Sephardi ultra-Orthodox community in Israel. It’s 1983, the Ashkenazi establishment rules everything and Cohen’s efforts seem quixotic. But he perseveres, and by doing so, changes the political landscape in Israel forever. Inspired by real events, The Unorthodox is a highly entertaining – and enlightening – tale about the beginnings of a political revolution.

Amsterdam: City of Water and Commerce

Amsterdam is a lot more than canals and bicycles. Its history stretches back to a 12th century fishing village, before turning itself into a great European commercial centre in the late 16th century. Alongside this commercial city arose a wonderful city of culture in the Dutch Golden Age. Yet Amsterdam also witnessed many devastating wars, right up to The Second World War. A city with many ups and downs but today it remains one of the continent’s most vibrant and tolerant of cities.
