South America from Independence to Today

South America is a continent many know little about, yet one that deserves our attention. These newly independent states which began with such high hopes, have, two hundred years on, still failed in the main to rid themselves of corruption, poverty, repression, and dictatorial rule. We shall examine this history in order to attempt to understand why, to many observers, the continent still seems too often to be unstable.
