Mitzvah Day: Camp Simcha

Camp Simcha exists to improve the quality of life for Jewish families affected by serious childhood illness. Their mission is to ensure that no such child, anywhere in the UK has to suffer alone. On Mitzvah Day they will be hosting a gift collection and wrapathon, crafting gift bags from old newspapers and then making an activity card to go in the bag to be given along with the toys that we collect. Make sure you bring a toy to donate and an old newspaper to make the Gift bag.

Mitzvah Day: Sadeh Farm

Sadeh, which means ‘field’ in Hebrew, is the first UK Jewish farm and environmental community of our generation. Rooted in Jewish values, Sadeh promotes positive environmental change through cultivation of the land and environmental education, and strengthen the Jewish community’s voice and commitment to environmental issues. On Mitzvah Day, Sadeh will teach you how to pickle - essential for preserving food and cutting down on waste. Bring a couple of jars and vegetables to be pickled – take home one jar and donate the other to a local foodbank.

DKMS vision is to ‘delete blood cancer’ and to create a future where every blood cancer patient has a second chance of life. today DKMS have more than 8 million potential donors registered worldwide, and has given more than 69,000 second chances of life to people diagnosed with blood cancer. During Mitzvah Day they’ll invite people to give a simple sample of spit which will then be used to add you onto their donor registry.

Harold Feinstein started taking pictures in his teens, exhibited at MoMA before he turned 20 and was an integral part of the mid-century New York School of Photography alongside Diane Arbus and Garry Winogrand. This Autumn we will explore the richness of modern Jewish literature through reading Israeli, European and American books. This term's books will include Liar by Ayelet Gundar-Goshen, The Tobacconist by Robert Seethaler, Afua Hirsh's Brit(ish): On Race, Identity and Belonging, Shylock Is My Name and Howard Jacobson's rewriting of Shakespeare's most famous Jew.
