Whitechapel, mysteries of the old jewish quarter

with Stephen Burstin

Walks & Trips

Join us as we walk along Whitechapel to hear compelling stories as we visit lots of places of great interest …the Jewish immigrant who was the only witness to one of Jack the Ripper’s gruesome murders; the many Jewish labour unions and extreme groups which fought their community’s cause;  the Yiddish newspaper that refused to tow the official line and challenged the Jewish leadership;  how one family’s kosher business attracted some unexpected customers such as the Bishop of Whitechapel and one famous non-Jewish mayor of New York. See the tiny synagogue dwarfed on all sides by a giant mosque; the Yiddish theatre that performed translations of Shakespearean plays and Verdi operas; a pub where a pint and a potato latke was the usual fayre; the aptly named Jewish Market of Hessel Street; the very spot where Jewish activists fought the infamous Oswald Mosley’s hated fascists during the celebrated Battle of Cable Street; and other engrossing sights.

Be introduced to some incredible individuals from the old days such as the dreaded Kosher Nostra, the Jewish gangs that plagued the Jewish East End;  the chief rabbi who came to Queen Victoria’s rescue at her hour of need;  the Rothschild who supported anti-Semitic and anti-alien political candidates;  the Jewish boxing champion whose greatest match was outside the ring;  the Yiddish actress who said the show must go on despite German bombs falling on London;  the wedding photographer who brought Hollywood to the East End; and other striking characters too.
