Stephen Burstin: Hampton Court Palace with amazing Jewish connections

Classes & Courses

Historian Stephen Burstin recounts in this fascinating TALK the story of Hampton Court Palace, favourite home of the notorious King Henry VIII and his Six (unfortunate) Wives. While sitting comfortably in your seat at JW3 – and with a host of colour slides to illustrate the lecture – we will:- Explore the amazing surviving Tudor kitchens where staff had the onerous task of preparing royal banquets of gastronomic extravagance for 800 guests …every day! See the magnificent State Rooms as you discover the incredulous life of King Henry and the fate of each of his six unfortunate wives who left their own individual marks on the Palace; you will even see the very corridor where one of Henry’s wives is said to haunt today; marvel too at the exquisite Chapel Royal and the very spot where Henry regularly prayed Enjoy the splendour of the glorious award-winning gardens including the largest grapevine in the world and the famous maize.

Hear how one luscious garden took three years to create and a few seconds for the king to destroy before rebuilding it yet again. Be amazed at Jewish connections including how King Henry turned to Jewish sages for help in securing one divorce; the story of the Abraham tapestries that adorn the Palace walls; the horrible demise of the Jewish physician who was personal doctor to Henry’s daughter Queen Elizabeth I; how a Jewish hero saved one Palace royal resident from an assassin's bullet; the tragic truth behind the famous painting of the Palace once owned by a Holocaust victim; and even more enthralling Jewish anecdotes at the Palace. Other entertaining stories and sights during this talk include one royal resident’s insatiable love of a newly discovered beverage ..hot drinking chocolate; the water fountain that once dispensed wine; the controversial (and visible) origin of the word eavesdropping that led to the execution of one of Henry’s wives; and lots of other interesting tales
