South America from Independence to Today
With William Tyler MBE

South America is a continent many know little about, yet one that deserves our attention. The story that will unfold begins with the overthrow of the imperial and colonising Powers of Spain and, in the case of Brazil, Portugal. In the aftermath of Revolution in France in 1789 and the conquest of the Mother Countries by Napoleon, the embryonic states of South America moved towards freedom – some rapidly, others more slowly.
These newly independent states which began with such high hopes, have, two hundred years on, still failed in the main to rid themselves of corruption, poverty, repression, and dictatorial rule. We shall examine this history in order to attempt to understand why, to many observers, the continent still seems too often to be unstable.
