So They Call You Pisher!

Part of the Hampstead & Highgate Literary Festival

Arts & Culture

“If you didn’t know whether to risk doing something, what’s the worst that could happen? ‘So they call you pisher!’”

To close the festival, Michael Rosen speaks to Viv Groskop about his new memoir, which recounts his early years in the North London suburbs. His parents first met as teenage Communists in the 1930s Jewish East End and the family home was filled with stories of relatives around the world, including those who had disappeared in Europe. Unlike the children around him, Rosen grew up dreaming of a socialist revolution; Party meetings were held in the front room, summers were for communist camping holidays, until it all changed after a trip to East Germany.

Michael Rosen is a renowned poet, performer, broadcaster and scriptwriter. He is the former Children’s Laureate, host of BBC Radio 4’s Word of Mouth and author or editor of over 140 books.

Viv Groskop is a writer, critic, broadcaster, stand-up comedian, MC, literary event host and former Artistic Director of the Independent Bath Literature Festival.
