With Caroline Marcus

Classes & Courses

Join museum and gallery learning consultant, Caroline Marcus, to discover more about the artist Rembrandt and the Jews of Amsterdam. Rembrandt was the Dutch celebrity artist of his day and lived in the heart of Amsterdam’s Jewish Quarter. Find out more about his connection to his neighbour, the Rabbi, who was an influence in the readmission of the Jews to England in 1656 and possibly influenced Rembrandt’s artistic interpretation in his painting Belshazzar’s Feast, 1635.

Take a step back in time to explore Amsterdam in 1635, and through Rembrandt’s eyes, meet some of the Sephardi and Ashkenazi Jews he encountered. Rembrandt mingled with, painted, etched and drew Jews. His Jewish patrons, liked prints, synagogue scenes and subjects from Jewish history and the bible to hang in their homes. Please join me to discover more about Rembrandt and the Rabbi!
