The Prince of West End Avenue

Arts & Culture

Adapted from Alan Isler’s National Jewish Book Award-winning novel and performed by Kerry Shale. This is a staged reading directed by John Abbott.

The octogenarian residents of the Emma Lazarus Retirement Home in New York are attempting to rehearse a kosher production of Hamlet when their leading man drops dead. In the ensuing struggle for power, German émigré Otto Korner, 83, grasps his final chance to play the Prince. Amidst theatrical and religious bickering, the entrance of a young female physical therapist stirs terrible memories in Otto.

The show must go on, but not until Otto’s hidden past moves to centre stage.

Kerry Shale’s adaptation was a sell-out at Hampstead Theatre in 1997 before touring the world. Kerry’s last JW3 appearance was as Mel Brooks’ The 2000 Year Old Man.

Kerry Shale has won awards for radio acting, adaptation and audio book narration. He has appeared onstage in the West End and at the National Theatre, The Royal Court, The Almeida and Hampstead Theatres. Recent television work includes Living The Dream and Patrick Melrose.

“Shale is hilariously touching. Clearly the best solo show in town.” - International Herald Tribune
