Cinema's first 'talkie', from 1927, stars Al Jolson as an entertainer who defies the traditions of his devout Jewish family.

Cantor Rabinowitz is upset as his son Jakie (Al Jolson) shows so little interest in carrying on the family's traditions and heritage. For five generations, men in the family have been cantors in the synagogue, but Jakie is more interested in jazz and ragtime music. One day, they have such a bitter argument that Jakie leaves home for good...

The Jazz Singer made cinema history as the first feature-length motion picture with not only a synchronized recorded music score, but also lip-synchronous singing and speech in several isolated sequences. The film ends with a controversial sequence in which Jolson performs in blackface.
