After sitting Shiva for their adult son’s death, an Israeli couple chooses very different ways to deal with their grief.

One Week and A Day provides a nuanced perspective on loss that is as merciless as it is funny and insightful. Israeli-American filmmaker Asaph Polonsky won the Critics’ Week prize at Cannes for this, his first-ever feature, which drew strong reviews and a standing ovation at its official screening. Starring Shai Avivi, who is often described as ’the Israeli Larry David’, One Week and a Day is a moving ‘dramedy’ about grief and getting high.

This impressive debut opens as Eyal finishes sitting Shiva - mourning the death of his son from cancer. As the world refuses to accommodate his wife Vicky and Eyal’s sensitivities during their time of bereavement – taxi drivers are still difficult, neighbours are still obnoxious, and grave diggers are just as indifferent as anyone else in the service industry – the two grieving parents find themselves behaving in outlandish ways as they attempt to regain a sense of control over their lives.
