Nicholas Maes and the Golden Age of Holland

with Patrick Bade

Classes & Courses

Nicolaes Maes was a leading artist of the Dutch Golden Age. He is best known for intimate scenes of daily life where he pioneered the theme of the eavesdropper; his carefully styled narratives making the viewer a participant in the scenes. His early history paintings were in the style of his teacher Rembrandt while the later period of his life he devoted himself almost exclusively to portraits. Patrick will put Maes in the context of the Dutch Golden Age which was such a dominant era. Patrick’s session stands alone and will enhance any visit to the Nicholas Maes exhibition at the National Gallery.
