Modern Jewish Literature

with Aviva Dautch

Classes & Courses

We will explore the richness of modern Jewish literature through reading Israeli, European and American books including: Nicole Krauss’s Forest Dark which meditates on ‘the idea of being in two places at once’ and what it means to be Jewish in Tel Aviv and New York; Ruth Gilligan’s Nine Folds Make a Paper Swan, a novel that explores three cross-sections of Irish-Jewish life from 1901 to the present day and The Diamond Setter by Moshe Sakal, who uses the journey of a famous blue jewel to illuminate diverse facets of sexual and political tensions in Israel and across the Middle East.
