MARGO. Half woman, half beast

Arts & Culture

We’re more than a little bit proud to present our in-house Cabaret MARGO: Half Woman, Half Beast in an exclusive preview before it heads off to Edinburgh for the festival.

Featuring accompaniment from a live piano and the outstanding vocal stylings of Melinda Hughes, MARGO, set in Wiemar Germany, delves into a world on the brink and explores the responses of both Jewish and artistic communities to an increasingly unstable political climate.

Drawing parallels with modern day issues of persecution, the evening will take you on a rollercoaster of emotions through a political minefield against the backdrop of Hitler’s rise to power.

Margo Lion, the celebrated cabaret star, was gripped by the decadence of Weimar Berlin. Married to the leading lyricist of the day, Marcellus Schiffer, she performed at the famous music hall Shall und Rauch but theirs was a tempestuous relationship, fuelled by alcohol, cocaine and jealousy.

MARGO brings to life the famous songs of the day against a backdrop of highly charged sexual fever and political unrest, featuring music by Mischa Spoliansky, Friedrich Hollaender, Kurt Weil and Werner Heymann, as well as new songs by Melinda Hughes and Jeremy Limb.
