Kinoteka: Marek Edelman...And There Was Love in the Ghetto

Cinema

Directed by Andrzej Wajda, Jolanta Dylewska | 2019 | DE & PL | 1hr 40 | Certificate 18

Shortly before his death in 2009, Jolanta Dylewska interviewed Marek Edelman – a member of the Bund, and veteran of both the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising and Warsaw Uprising – about a somewhat surprising subject from his memoir of life during the Holocaust: love.

By interspersing parts of the interview with stunningly-recreated scenes, Marek Edelman… And There Was Love in the Ghetto looks back at how Jewish women and men relied on tenderness, passion and lust in a time of unparalleled horror and depravity.

The film will be introduced by Dr François Guesnet, reader in Modern Jewish History at the Department of Hebrew and Jewish Studies - University College London.
