JT LeRoy
UK Jewish Film

Directed by Justin Kelly 2018 | Canada, USA, UK | English, French with English subtitles | Starring Kristen Stewart, Laura Dern, Jim Sturgess, Diane Kruger, Courtney Love | 1h 48 | Certificate 15
His first book Sarah, published in 1999, propelled young JT LeRoy to literary stardom. His semi-autobiographical account of a childhood blighted by drug and sexual abuse in America’s underbelly earned him a cult status and the adoration of both the literati and Hollywood elite. But more shocking than the topics LeRoy’s books explored was the truth behind them, finally exposed in 2006: LeRoy was a well-crafted persona created by Jewish Brooklynite Laura Albert and embodied by her boyfriend’s sister, the androgynous Savannah Knoop.
Co-written by Knoop and starring Kristen Stewart and Laura Dern, JT LeRoy is a remarkable tale of one daring hoax and our willingness to suspend disbelief to satisfy our never-ending craving for authenticity.
